Alianza GIST thanks all those who participated in the online seminar in Spanish, “Comprendiendo Los Tumores Del Estroma Gastro Intestinal (GIST) Desde Lo Basico A La Clinica,” presented by Dr. Matías Chacón of the Instituto Alexander Fleming de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Alianza GIST also launched a new social networking community where GIST patients and caregivers can login to the Comunidad de Alianza GIST and chat with each other about relevant topics related to their cancer. There is also functionality where each country organization has a “Group” set up where they can communicate internally with their members. At the moment, this comunidad site is only available in Spanish.
Alianza GIST, in partnership with the Life Raft Group, The Max Foundation, and Tecnológico de Monterrey hosted an event for Latin American physicians on Sunday June 5th at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference (ASCO). The meeting drew physicians from many countries as they discussed best practices in Latin America for GIST and convened a Tumor Board with case discussions.

Currently comprised of twelve countries, this group of patient advocates from across Latin America has formed a partnership dedicated to improving the survival and lives of GIST patients in Latin America.

Unfortunately, there are no statistics about the incidence of GIST in Latin America; however, research is underway to investigate the rates of this disease in the region. The LRG has identified a need to close the information gap in Latin America among GIST patients, caregivers, and their healthcare professionals. The Latin American GIST Initiative aims to improve the survival rate of GIST patients with current treatment options, close the gap between scientific knowledge and clinical treatment of GIST, identify and reach more patients and key medical professionals, and empower patients to take charge of their own care.
