Sarcoma Awareness Month is upon us. It was only about a year ago when Maura Cesarini, a longtime Life Raft Group member, won the Sarcoma Foundation’s 2012 Courage Award.

Maura waged a 10-year battle with GIST, but is no longer with us. Her husband Mike Cesarini, a detective in the Brockton, maura-sarcoma-awareness-monthMassachusetts, police department, said that during that time waking up in the morning to see she was still alive “was like winning the lottery everyday.”

What he misses the most is “her calming presence” and her ability to lead her family. He said he was grateful for the time she was able to spend “after that devastating diagnosis.”

“I don’t look at it as if she had lost her battle with GIST because she accomplished so much and affected so many people in those 10 years,” he said.

Progress in treating GIST patients gave her that time, he said, and so he continues to raise funds for GIST research. He recently raised $3,200 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

We remember Maura and all those who have raised awareness in our efforts to find a cure during Sarcoma Awareness Month!
