Darlene Joyce Vaughan, 61, one of the “miracle patients” whose clinical trial experience helped speed government approval of Gleevec, died April 25 in Mesa, Ariz. Vaughan was one of the handful of clinical trial patients profiled in the book, “Magic Cancer Bullet,” written by Dr. Daniel Vasella, chairman and chief executive officer of the pharmaceutical company Novartis.
Sidney Locker of Willowbrook, on Staten Island in New York state, a World War II veteran and retired Port Richmond High School guidance counselor, died April 26 at Staten Island University Hospital. He was 76.
Arthur Dakota “AD” Rhea III, 47, died April 20, 2004, at his Canton, Conn., home surrounded by his family. AD was born April 26, 1956, in Richmond, Va., and spent his early years in Colonial Williamsburg.
Mr. Curtis R. Berry, age 42, of Plano, Texas, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at his home. Curtis was born on June 25, 1961, to C. Curtis and Edith (Vaughn) Berry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
